VEGAS, BABY

Top draw for the 2013 Las Vegas auction scene will be this 1939/51 BMW RS255 Supercharged Rennsport, built by Walter Zeller at the BMW factory, from authentic spares, being sold by Bonhams
While I'm no particular fan of the city itself, the annual Las Vegas vintage motorcycle auction weekend is a must-attend for anyone looking to buy bikes or automobilia, but more importantly is the single largest gathering of hardcore vintage bike enthusiasts from around the globe.  The long weekend for 2013 has calmed down dramatically since last year, as the angry upstart RM Auctions, who vowed to 'put MidAmerica out of business', was itself roundly whipped after boasting they would dominate the market of its two rivals, MidAmerica and Bonhams.
This 1973 MV 750GT is one of 71 MV Agustas on sale at MidAmerica; the Gary Kohs collection, to be sold individually.  While Agostini wannabes rush to 750 Sport and Americas, I think this GT is superb.
Anyone present at last year's mad circus of time-slot competing cattle-calls was either dizzy from trying to do it all, or taking advantage of RM's dismal sales results to take home truckloads of cheap machines.  If you're hoping for a repeat of last year's bargains, I'm afraid your cash-cow has wandered home, after a major re-think of its vintage bike strategy.  RM sells bikes well when mixed in with their successful car auctions, but the super-aggressive 'I'll shout you dead' squat directly on MidAmerica's auction dates (and a rumored attempt to steal away MidAmerica's venue itself!), combined with their flooding the weekend with another 700+ bikes (many of which were owned by the auction house... in which case, does that not make them a Dealer, who auctions their wares?) netted them a whopping cash loss, estimated by some to be well over $.5M...or even much more.
A 1930 Böhmerland in original paint, with sidecar!  At Bonhams...
Things are back to the 'new normal' at Las Vegas in 2013: Bonhams will sell 170 bikes plus their usual excellent selection of Automobilia on Thursday Jan 10th, and MidAmerican will sell a bumper crop of 600 machines between Thursday evening the 10th, and Saturday the 12th.  That's nearly 700 vintage motorcycles for sale over 3 days; there's no place on earth you'll find such a huge selection of machines.
An incredible consignment; Four BMW Rennsports, and a Matchless G50 with serious Isle of Man history, at Bonhams
Highlights?  Bonhams has consigned a collection of 19 cutaway engines - a quirky collectible, but undoubtedly cool.  The big hitters this year are all racing machines, with FOUR BMW Rennsport racers, including a supercharged 1939 RS255 -just like Georg Meier's '39 TT winner- which was assembled at the BMW factory using all-original parts.  It doesn't get much better than that, and where will you find another?  Unobtanium...but one's for sale at Bonhams.  Other cool track stars include a '67 BSA A50R with sterling US race credentials, a 1960 Matchless G50 with lots of Isle of Man history, and a 1970 BSA Rob North Rocket 3 racer, one of 11 ex-Works originals, which dominated Daytona in '71.  Plus the usual assortment of excellent exotics Bonhams is known for; a Mars, some original-paint fantastica (Alldays and Onions, HD Peashooter, a unique LEO, and a Böhmerland!), a European collection of lightweight bikes, plus one machine I'm personally fascinated by, which I won't mention, as I want it!
The ex-Steve McQueen, restored by Bud Ekins, 1938 Triumph Speed Twin at MidAmerica
MidAmerica has, as usual, outdone themselves with consignments (both auction houses have 20% more bikes than last year, perhaps a remnant of last year's 'king tide'); their big coup is the Gary Kohs collection of 72 MV Agustas.  Gary has come to his senses after two failed attempts to sell the collection entier, and the bikes will be sold individually...so if you've ever wanted one of Count Domenico's fiery racers, talk to your bank this week (Bonhams has a 'Squalo' as well).  A surprise entry is Jeff Decker's famous custom Vincent, subject of a Cycle World article I wrote last year.  And with hundreds of entries, a deep array of postwar British and American bikes are available.
The ex-Steve McQueen '70 Husqvarna 400 Cross, at Bonhams
Both Bonhams and MidAmerica have 'Steve McQueen' bikes for sale, which always bring a premium; Bonhams has a 1970 Husqvarna 400 Cross owned by Steve and as used in 'On Any Sunday' (but not THE bike), and MidAmerica has a Bud Ekins-restored '38 Triumph Speed Twin, which he sold to Steve.  I haven't heard the best feedback about Bud's restorations mechanically...but the provenance is solid gold.
MV Agusta Bialbero DOHC 125cc racer at MidAmerica
If you can't be there in person, check out the respective auction websites, to see what might tempt you.  Both auctions take online bids, phone bids, bids by mail or carrier pigeon...just get in touch with them if you see something you need.  And if you're there, say hi.

Another stellar BSA racer; a one-of-11 factory 1970 'Rob North' Rocket 3.  At Bonhams.

BONHAMS' QUAIL EXTRAVAGANZA

The Motosacoche v-twin formerly owned by Bud Ekins, and restored by 'Von Dutch' (Kenny Howard) while he worked for Ekins.  Part of the 'Eddie Rickenbacker' collection at the Bonhams Quail Lodge sale, August 16th
Pebble Beach Week is a financial powerhouse for US collector car auctions, as 4 big sales tease the wallets of well-heeled visitors from around the globe, each racking up mega-millions of dollars.  The inclusion of motorcycles is a recent phenomenon at this week-long party, where the very very rich mingle with impecunious gearheads, oohing and aahing over impossible arrays of glittering vehicles, on the grassy golf courses of the Quail Motorsports Gathering (Friday) and Pebble Beach (Sunday), the tarmac of the Monterey Jet Center (Wed night), or the race track at Laguna Seca (all week).  Smaller shows crop up all over the Carmel area for Italian cars, Lemons, one-make clubs, etc...plus invite-only events at the sumptuous part-time homes of a few 'local' billionaires, which have aspirational climbers greasing elbows and cozying up to the right people at cocktail parties, hoping for an invite.
One of THREE Crocker v-twins for sale at the Bonhams Quail Lodge sale...
Motorcycles have always been part of Gordon McCall's Jet Center Party and Quail Motorsports Gathering, and were accepted on the lawn at Pebble Beach just 3 years ago.  Bonhams began adding a few bikes to their car sale at Quail Lodge, while MidAmerica has pitched a tent of motorcycles at the Pebble automobilia garden since bikes have been allowed on 17-Mile Drive (for the week only, mind you; the rest of the year they're verboten).  Mecum had what looked like a disastrous sale of motorcycles last year, but are back at it with the 71-MV Agusta collection of Gary Kohs, being sold as a single lot.
A genuine ex-works 'Rob North' framed factory BSA racer, one of 11 built, confirmed by Mr North himself
This year Bonhams is laying out an incredible spread of machines at the Quail Lodge on August 16th, worthy of, or even better than their top sale at Stafford, which has kept Bonhams at the #1 spot for many years. After recently announcing they'd secured the long-coveted 'Eddie Rickenbacker' collection of early machines, it became clear the Quail sale would be more than 'merely' a 3-Crocker affair.
How about a 1945 Kettenkrad?  Using a 1500cc Opel engine, they're simple to drive, with a 50mph top speed, capacity to climb 25degree hills with ease... and with rubber tracks, they are street legal in the USA! The possibilities are intriguing.  This example is in apparently original-paint condition, and in excellent mechanical shape.
To the Crockers and 'Rickenbackers', Bonhams has added plenty of other significant motorcycles, like a genuine ex-Works 'Rob North' BSA triple racer, a '37 Brough Superior SS100, 1952 Vincent Black Shadow, a 1928 Windhoff 4-cylinder, an ex-Otis Chandler 1920 'White Mars' A20, a barn-find 1910 Pierce 4 in incredible condition, even a 1945 Kettenkrad...all of which are expected to drift into 6-figure territory.  It will be an exciting sale to watch...check out the catalog here.
The 1920 Mars A20 was a sophisticated and expensive big twin, with a 956cc flat-twin engine made by Maybach.

ARIZONA ROAMING, PART 2

As the Velocette Summer Rally continues to explore the mountains, deserts, and canyons of Arizona...

ARIZONA ROAMING

Tom Ross rides toward Sedona on the Velocette Venom his father bought new...

The Velocette Owner's Club of North America is a simple club; no monthly meetings, and two events during the year - a 'Spring Opener' ride in the Napa Valley, and a 'Summer Rally'.  2012 marked the 30th year a bunch of Velocette geeks clumped together for a week-long, 1000-mile ride, making loops generally west of the Rocky Mountains, as far north as BC and Alberta, Canada, and as far south as the mountains overlooking Los Angeles (for a map of where we've been, click here). I joined the party late; this summer marked my 24th Rally - I missed 2010 when I was licking my wounds in Paris.  That's 24,000 miles, exploring the best two-lane riding roads the West has to offer, generally traffic-free and loaded with amazing scenery, almost always on a Velocette (either my Thruxton or KTT MkIV).  This year I rode a '65 Triumph Bonneville, and I've been guilty twice prior of bringing 'brand x' bikes; a 1974 Ducati 750GT and a 1931 Norton CS1, just to mix things up.  I actually sold the Norton CS1 after a mid-Rally ride-swap with an overbored 1937 Velo KSS Mk2, which was so much smoother and more genteel than the piledriving tough-guy Norton, I sought out an early KTT instead - no regrets there (the Norton now lives in Holland, being restored in the capable hands of John deKruif).

This year the rally made a cloverleaf from Flagstaff, Arizona, and explored the high country (above 6000') from the Grand Canyon to the Navajo/Hopi reservations on the mesas.  Amazingly beautiful place.  I can't fathom why more vintage bike clubs don't host long rides, there's absolutely nothing like it.  With plenty of knowledgable friends on hand, making repairs isn't daunting, although as the bikes are ridden more, problems become rarer, as the 'issues' get sorted out.  This year only one Velo out of 50 failed to complete the course, due to a worn-out magneto. Had he carried a spare, in two hours it would have been back on the road...
From the city museum in the little town of Jerome Arizona, some motorcycle history...a 1912 Indian
1915 Harley Davidson from our lunch stop; Dee Cameron's dad owned this from new, and drove it across the US...this was actually the first pre-'16 Harley I'd ever ridden, many years ago, and I was impressed with its speed, smoothness, and good handling.  It wobbled a bit at very low speed, but straightened out and sang along nicely with an open throttle.

Between 1959-64, a hillclimb terrorized the streets of Jerome, the 'Ghost City Hillclimb'...
Family heirloom #2; Dee's pop's Crocker special, a '36 hemi-head engine in HD frame with BSA gearbox.  Tasty.
The engine in question, plus distinctive lightening holes...everywhere
Family heirloom #3; a genuine 'California Cut-Down', the 1920s precursor to the 'Bob Job', this one with a JDH twin-cam engine.  Light and fast.
The man himself; nice to see you up and around, Dee
Mirek, Dai, and the Endurance.
Alison, the Enfield-killer, all the way from Melbourne
Lovely featherbed ES2 Norton
Crocker, Moto Guzzi Falcone...I witnessed a 'slow idle' contest in Montana a few years ago, which this Falcone won easily.  Bonk...bonk...bonk...

And now for something completely different; a JAP sports 500cc engine in an HD 'J' frame...

Oh Mary Ann, where are you now?
'Montezuma's Castle' National Monument; a misnomer, for the Aztecs never made it this far north...these were Anasazi dwellings
Father Olav and son Eric trying to fix sister Alison's borrowed Bullet, which was shaking itself to bits, losing significant bolts, and breaking brackets.  Ah, the process of emendment...
Pete and Atticus Young testing Kim's KSS...
How many of the Young family will fit on a sidecar?  Three, today...
Ghost City Hillclimb, with Porsche 356C  sports racer, equipped with a rollbar (the only car pictured using such...a very good idea with the steep cliffs lining the course)
Miner's transport from Jerome, AZ, where copper mines produced over $1Bn of ore before being shut down by the 1940s
Eric Hassel and the red Venom built up for this ride
A genuine BSA Rocket Gold Star (I asked if it has the 'A10' frame prefix); basically a Super Rocket with DBD34 attire, and somehow even prettier than the single-cylinder clubman racer is mimics.  While the big BSA single is more robust when hammered full throttle, the big twin is a more civilized beast, and certainly so when two-up.
Blatant product placement; Ruby 'Belvedere' helmets taking in the Café lifestyle in Sedona...yes Ruby sponsors The Vintagent, but only because their helmets are amazing.
Susan wears a 'Ruby Red' Belvedere, available only at the Rue Hérold  Ruby boutique
A rare Velocette Scrambler occupies pride of place, with plenty of other fantastic iron.  Dee raced this at the Catalina GP last year...

Trophies?  Just stick 'em in the attic...
In its element; Velocette Venom Endurance model
Not many families have carried the kids along in a sidecar from when they were babies.  Pete and Kim Young are a rare pair
